Salzburger Marionettentheater
What distinguishes the Salzburg Marionette Theater from other theaters? That on stage the puppets are the main actors! And that the people are in the background - or rather above things. While the artistically carved and richly detailed marionettes perform plays, fairy tales, musicals and operas on the stage, they are guided from a height of two meters on 12 strings by the dexterous puppeteers who have mastered this unique art form. What is more, the players breathe life into the thread-guided figures with their special playing technique, which is unique in the whole world.
Because of this special playing technique, the Salzburg Marionette Theater was included in the circle of immaterial UNESCO cultural heritage. With this recognition, UNESCO honors the playing practice of the Salzburg Marionette Theater as a cultural asset worthy of preservation and the "most highly developed form of puppet and figure theater."
